Searching for gemstones is not the easiest of things when the mining sections are ill-lit, cold, and often a confusing space for the senses; I mean, the echoes alone didn't help with how far things were. But! There's a tiny little Kopar who kind of... I don't know how to describe it, but pollinates stones? Watching one at work, I realized it wasn't pulling them from the ground, but putting newly glowing gems into the ground, then scuttling away, watching to see if anyone finds the gemstone it just planted. I guess they're a sign I'm on the right track.
